IT notebook: FEI, Itasca, Mincom
Staff reporter, 1 February 2012
FEI Company vice-president and general manager Paul Scagnetti says the company’s recent acquisition of ASPEX Corporation would prove pivotal to its ongoing strategy aimed at moving automated mineral and petrographic analysis “outside the laboratory to where mining, and oil and gas companies are exploring, extracting, processing and refining”.
“We want to facilitate faster, easier analysis,” Scagnetti said.
FEI’s recently launched WellSite software had Aspex Extreme as the SEM platform.
“This acquisition will enable the [FEI] Natural Resources group to better integrate our QEMSCAN and MLA software products onto the Aspex platforms,” Scagnetti said. “Aspex has been a great partner thus far in developing the mobile QEMSCAN WellSite product, and we look forward to working more closely with them now they are part of FEI.”
CONSULTING and technology group Itasca has retained Roger Hart as its principal software advisor, though he stepped down from his role as director of software services at the start of January.
Itasca said Hart had helped the company achieve “world class prominence” for its software products. He had also built a team to direct future software development at Itasca, with David Russell recently added to the group as chief software architect.
Meanwhile, Applied Seismology Consultants (ASC) is now the UK agent for all Itasca software codes, support and queries, replacing Mott MacDonald.
US GOLD miner Allied Nevada has been added to Mincom’s list of licensed Ellipse 8 users, with the company aiming to deploy the mobile-enabled enterprise asset management (EAM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) software suites throughout its operations.
Allied Nevada will use applications for enterprise asset and work management, finance and human resources, as well as the Mincom Integration Platform and Mincom Enterprise Reporting & Analytics. The miner has also licensed Mincom LinkOne, Mincom’s solution for electronic parts catalogs and maintenance manuals.
“With Ellipse 8, we believe Mincom has solidified its position as the world’s best-in-class EAM and ERP provider,” said Allied Nevada chief information officer Jim Cameron. “After a thorough evaluation, we selected Ellipse 8 as the best solution to support our business objectives, now and in the future as we expand operations. With Ellipse 8, we’re also implementing a modern platform for enterprise asset management with a Web-based architecture and light footprint that can help us significantly reduce IT costs and resource requirements.”
