Norwich Park shutdown

MELBOURNE, Apr 12 – BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance is shutting down its Norwich Park coal mine, one of the Bowen Basin operations in Queensland, Australia hit by continuing industrial disputes.
BMA says the closure is not directly related to the strikes. “While recent industrial action has had an impact on production, the mine has been unprofitable for some months,” said BMA Asset president Stephen Dumble.
The company blames lower production, a significant increase in costs and lower coal prices for the mine’s losses. A seven week review failed to find immediate remedies.
Dumble says BMA will look at measures to re-establish Norwich Park as a sustainable, low-cost operation. “Until we find viable solutions for the future of the mine, we will not re-start operations,” he said.
BMA aims to offer Norwich Park workers new jobs at the nearby Saraji mine where possible.
