Rail strike forces LKAB force majeure
29th May 2012
Swedish iron ore miner Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) has declared force majeure due to strike in Norway that has halted rail shipments from Kiruna, the world’s largest underground iron ore mine, to the port of Narvik.
The strike over salary claims by up to 30,000 public sector employees from three of the four main unions in Norway includes the Norwegian Rail Administration. All rail movements stopped last Thursday morning, and LKAB says there has been no progress in talks to date.
“We have no information on for how long the strike may continue,” the company says. Its stockpile at Narvik is running short.
Kiruna produces iron ore pellets for blast furnaces and direct reduction plants to European steelworks as well as markets in North Africa, the Middle East and South East Asia.
