Sandvik enters IBM alliance
Staff reporter, 4 July 2012
SWEDISH mining and construction equipment manufacturer Sandvik has struck a SEK2 billion (EUR229 million) deal with technology giant IBM to outsource IT infrastructure over the next five years.
The huge deal was described by Sandvik as “an important step towards strengthening the internal business solution for Sandvik IT and also a vital part in Sandvik’s ambition to be a globally integrated company”.
IBM will provide the manufacturer with full data centre and ‘workplace’ IT services, employing some Sandvik personnel during the transition.
“Data centre services includes the operation of all server platforms including hardware, application platform software and facilities where servers are placed,” Sandvik said.
“Workplace includes all services to manage office PCs as well as messaging, collaboration, standard applications and second line user support.
“All tasks within [these two areas] will be performed by IBM.”
Sandvik chief information officer Goran Kordel said the company was looking for greater internal IT synergies and to become a “more fast-paced, global and customer focused company”.
The agreement with IBM would ensure “scalability and flexibility in cost, resources and competence” for Sandvik. Longer term there would also be increased cost efficiency and quality of IT services, with “secure access to the right skills and competence”.
“We are very satisfied to have entered this agreement with IBM and have high expectations on their ability to meet our demands,” Kordel said.
