Congress supports US permit changes

JULY 16 – An act passed by the US House of Representatives will establish a more effective permitting system for the country’s mining industry.
The National Strategic and Critical Minerals Production Act aims to minimise delays for mining projects that are necessary for national and economic security, energy infrastructure and domestic industries.
According to the act, a project leader should be appointed to coordinate with various agencies to review projects.
National Mining Association president and CEO Hal Quinn described the act as moving the country’s permitting system into the 21st century.
He said that, while few countries could rival the US in abundance of mineral resources, less than half the country’s mineral needs were met from the domestic mining industry.
“We remain cursed with a third-world permitting system that discourages investment and the downstream industries, related jobs, innovation and technology that depend on a secure and reliable mineral supply chain,” Quinn said.
