Shaft damage to cut Palabora production

JULY 17 – Palabora Mining has warned recent damage to the skip loading station will impact ore hoisting and copper production at the Palabora copper mine/smelter/refinery complex in the Limpopo province, South Africa.
The Rio Tinto group company says work is still under way to bring the production shaft back into operation following the July 4 incident, in which a newly replaced ore-hoisting guide rope failed in the production shaft.
A 3% increase in ore hoisting volumes for the first half of 2012 was accompanied by a decline in ore grade from 0.66% to 0.6% compared to H1 2011. Palabora says the decrease was expected due to alteration of mining tactics, and continues to be monitored.
Copper inventory will meet customer requirements until full production is restored.
The company raised magnetite production, taking advantage of increased logistical capacity from road and rail to alleviate lower commodity prices.
