Newcrest Mining has joined other big miners in forging a supply alliance with Leapfrog software provider ARANZ Geo.

NEW Zealand software company ARANZ Geo has signed a new enterprise software sale agreement with gold producer Newcrest Mining, which has operations in Australia, Indonesia, west Africa and Papua New Guinea.

The deal, as with ARANZ Geo’s previous ones with Rio Tinto and Barrick Gold, sees Newcrest build on long-term use by its geologists of the Leapfrog Mining software for modelling exploration data. ARANZ Geo said Newcrest was also using Leapfrog is also used as a “communications tool”.

Newcrest had developed a “sophisticated collaboration environment to facilitate the sharing of information relating to existing and potential mining projects”, ARANZ Geo said. “The collaboration environment enables inter-discipline discussion and presentation of information to the Newcrest senior management and board.”

Fraser MacCorquodale, general manager mineral development at Newcrest, said Leapfrog had been “great for modelling exploration data” but also enabled “effortless communication through conveying a better understanding of the geological story in a more compelling way”.

Leapfrog Mining is 3D geological modelling technology with innovative workflows that improves a user’s understanding of project geology. ARANZ Geo says the software allows accurate and consistent visualisation of data, boosting confidence in the interpretation and modelling of data from early exploration to mine remediation. Multiple hypotheses could be explored, new data added and course corrections made easily as a project proceeded.

“The decision by Newcrest Mining to sign this new enterprise software agreement marks a significant development in [our] relationship and we are pleased to be partnering with an industry leader like Newcrest,” said Simon Elphick, ARANZ Geo’s key account manager.
