A PUBLIC viewing platform is one novel feature of this new bridge (pictured) built by Rio Tinto to allow it to expand production from its nearby Mesa A iron ore mine in northern Western Australia.

The new Paterson Bridge on the Northwest Coastal Highway was this week officially opened. It is named after the late Algy Paterson, a respected elder of the Kuruma and Marthudunera (K&M) aboriginal people, with the naming plaque unveiled by Rio Tinto chief development officer Pilbara Development, Andrew Kite.

Michael Gollschewski, Rio Tinto chief operating officer for expansion projects, said the 900m-long elevated diversion of the highway, including Paterson Bridge, ensured safe passage for regular road users as well as the fully laden mine trucks operating between the Warramboo pit, on the west side of the highway, and the existing Mesa A mining operations, 4km to the east.

“Paterson Bridge also includes a public viewing area, providing a great opportunity for the road users to see the huge haul trucks operating at first hand,” Gollschewski said.

More than 40 people attended the opening ceremony and also toured the adjacent 25 million-tonnes-per-annum Mesa A mining operation. HighGrade’s invite must have got lost in the mail.

Mesa A is run by Robe River Iron Associates, owned by Rio Tinto (53%), Mitsui (33%), Nippon Steel (10.5%) and Sumitomo Metal Industries (3.5%).
